Taft College's Unique Transition to Independent Living Program

 

The Transition to Independent Living Program (TIL) is an educational experience for developmentally disabled adults  emphasizing learning independent living skills.  The program stresses the importance of teaching people to accept responsibility for decisions and choices they make.

The following criteria are used to determine acceptance of a student into the program:

  1. The student should have a commitment to live independently upon completion of the TIL program.
  2. Motivation and eagerness to learn.
  3. Income equivalent to SSI's minimum rate for independent living.
  4. Physically able to engage in activities and complete tasks within the time frame allowed by the program.  Anyone physically disabled must be able to use a minimally modified dormitory.
  5. Ability to receive information and instruction from staff and provide responses and feedback when necessary.
  6. Attendance in a day activity.
  7. Acceptable social behavior verified by agency, school, or family.  Included is the ability to get along with peers, follow rules, accept supervision, and have no history of illegal activity.
  8. Ability to act as own guardian or have a guardian willing to relinquish guardianship as the student learns to manage his/her own life while in the program.
  9. Must be a graduate of a high school  or learning resource program.
  10. Completed and mailed application that supplies requested information.
