Results of the 2008 Career/Technical Education Student Survey


Survey Conducted and Compiled by the VTEA Funded Statewide Leadership Grant
For Industrial and Technical Education

SURVEY NOTE: this survey was administered to a total of 465 Industrial and Technical Education students by eight faculty members at: Long Beach City College, Chaffey College, Pierce College, and Los Angeles Trade Tech College during the period March through May 2008.

 

1.)  I have taken two or more Career/Technical Education courses within the past two years at this or another community college.
                        Yes: 57%                                                        No: 43%

2.)  I am working towards a community college Career/Technical Education degree or certificate.
                        Yes: 89%                                                        No: 11%

3.) I am learning new skills at a community college that I plan to utilize in my current job.
                        Yes: 80%                                                        No: 20%

4. I am learning new skills at a community college that I hope will assist me in moving up within my company to a better job.
                        Yes: 79%                                                        No: 21%

5.) I am learning new skills at a community college that I hope will assist me in finding a new, better paying job, requiring a higher level of skills training.
                        Yes: 96%                                                        No: 4%

6.) I am currently employed.

Was it a friend, parent, teacher, counselor, a general interest in the skill, or something mentioned in a previous course: I always wanted to pursue this career; friends and parents; boy friend made me go back to school; college faculty; counselor; high school teacher; peers/mentors; want a better job; co-worker; I want to move up at work; loss of job; WINTER of Long Beach; grand parents; father in law; life threatening event; sisters boy friend; need to change careers; siblings

10.): The Career/Technical Education courses that have helped me the most to progress on the job:
intro to careers; application of hands on work; English/Math/Science; work experience; career-tech courses.

11.) I would like the community colleges to offer emerging technology courses/programs that include: new/advanced software; classes scheduling that better accommodate work schedules; more hands-on skills programs; more emphasis on women in the trades.
