Results of the 2009 CTE Student Survey

Survey Conducted/ Compiled by the VTEA Funded Statewide Leadership Grant for Industrial and Technical Education

 

SURVEY NOTE: this survey was administered to a total of 578 Industrial and Technical Education students by 14 faculty members at: Long Beach City College, Citrus College, Rio Hondo College, Fresno City College, Antelope Valley College, Cosumnes River College, San Jose City College, Glendale College, Butte College and Los Angeles Trade Tech College during the period March through May 2009.

 

1.)  I have taken two or more Career/Technical Education courses within the past two years at this or another community college.

            Yes:   53%  (2008 57%)                                            No:   47%  (2008 43%)

 

2.)  I am working towards a community college Career/Technical Education degree or certificate.

            Yes:   81% (2008 89%)                                             No:   19%  (2008 11%)

 

3.) I am learning new skills at a community college that I plan to utilize in my current job.

            Yes:   75%  (2008 80%)                                            No:   24% (2008 20%)

 

4. I am learning new skills at a community college that I hope will assist me in moving up within my company to a better job.

            Yes:   68%  (2008 79%)                                            No: 32%   (2008 21%)

 

5.) I am learning new skills at a community college that I hope will assist me in finding a new, better paying job, requiring a higher level of skills training.

            Yes: 91%  (2008 96%)                                              No: 9%  (2008 4%)

9.): What inspired you to investigate or pursue a specific skill or career area? Was it a friend, parent, teacher, counselor, a general interest in the skill, or something mentioned in a previous course:

 

girlfriend, general interest, try something new, parent, work, boss, dad, advancement in current career, job opportunities, family, co-workers, Westec Trade Show, laid off/ want to better my skills, friend, unemployment/ need to better my skills in order to get a job, counselor, high school teacher, inspired by a speaker brought into a different class, more money, better pay, better paying job in a new career field, need to make a career change.

10.): The Career/Technical Education courses that have helped me the most to progress on the job:

 

AC/DC, Autocad, programming, math, electrical, welding, cad/cam, better understanding of terminology, computer courses, motor controls, classes have taught me patience-persistence- pay attention to detail, math in the trades, public speaking, English.

 

 

11.) I would like the community colleges to offer emerging technology courses/programs that include:

 

fiber optics, robotics, actual circuits, more practical applications, PV, Battery technology, Catia, mentorship programs, emerging technology courses, more skills classes, greener living courses, industry based software, sign language, help with  math, advanced Revit, alternate energy, Leeds Certification, sustainability, safety classes, more classes that are transferable to state colleges, OSHA certification, better-more efficient ways to transfer to other colleges with a similar program offering dealer factory training, evening courses, paid internships, alternate fuels, electrical instrumentation.
