American Society of
Mechanical Engineers Competition 2004
Delta College student design teams consistently out
pace their university counterparts when it comes to mechanical engineering.
Mark Dennehy (Stockton), Chris Pezzone (Stockton), and
Clinton Stafford (Manteca), placed third with their design in the Region IX
2004 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) at the University of
Southern California, which was held March 26th and 27th. Fielding two
additional entries were Delta students Bill Heslop (Lodi), Tiffany Cawelti
(Stockton), and Tom Hystad (Tracy).
ASME student members are given the same design problem worldwide and compete
in regional events leading to the international finals. The 2004 problem
required the student groups to design a small remote controlled vehicle that
would travel over an obstacle course and gently retrieve a quantity of
simulated land mines.
Delta College was the only community college to compete in Region IX, the
other participants were Cal Poly, CSU Chico, CSU Fresno, CSU Sacramento, CSU
Northridge, San Jose State University, Santa Clara University, UC Davis, UC
Santa Barbara, University of Hawaii, University of Nevada-Reno, University
of Southern California, and University of the Pacific.
Santa Clara University placed first and will advance to the international
finals in November 2004. Delta College's top-three showing follows a
remarkable 10-year history of high-placed results in national and
international competitions in prior years, against universities.
