Two California Community Colleges participate in 21st Century Learning Outcomes Project |
|
San Diego Miramar and Foothill College are two of sixteen community and technical colleges nationwide who have been chosen to participate in the League for Innovation’s 21st Century Learning Outcomes project. The goal of the three-year project, which began in 2000, is to define and document critical learning outcomes that students need to obtain to succeed in the workplace and society. Objectives for San Diego Miramar’s project are to conduct an assessment of how well instructional programs reflect outcomes-based learning; increase faculty awareness and participation in professional development activities that align curriculum with 21st Century Learning Outcomes core competencies; increase faculty knowledge and use of multiple methods for assessing and documenting student achievement; enhance curriculum to include measurable outcomes defined by core competencies; and identify and/or replicate best practices in outcomes-based learning strategies. Foothill College’s 21st Century Learning Outcomes Steering Committee, College Curriculum Committee and the General education Review Committee has identified four competencies and the knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA) that students must possess to earn an AA degree. This year, the team has worked to expand KSA curriculum standards to the entire campus. In 2003, the team will focus on documenting its performance in the areas of course completion, degrees and certificates awarded, advancement in basic skills courses, workforce development standards, and student self-assessment.
