Beacon PAL provides peer-assisted learning using collaborative learning techniques

Sacramento City College’s Beacon PAL program is a Peer-Assisted Learning program designed to provide course-related collaborative learning among a group of students.

Peer learning assistants are selected by faculty and trained in collaborative learning techniques, and assisted in the development of materials, activities and tools used during group meetings.

Learning assistants visit the classroom to explain the Beacon PAL program and invite students to sign up for the weekly two-hour study sessions.

An evaluation of Beacon PAL participants showed a higher success rate (85%) than non-participants (57%), and a higher completion rate (93%) than non-participants (73%).
