Rio Hondo College's Career Center Curriculum Component

Rio Hondo College

Faculty at Rio Hondo College integrate career activities into their curriculum in a variety of ways:

§         Students receive career-related assignments as part of their course work such as completing an interest or personality assessment, exploring one or more occupations, and developing a research paper focusing on a specific occupation or career.

§         Career counselors conduct workshops at the request of instructors.  Common topics include Meyer-Briggs assessments, resume development, and career exploration.

§         Students attend business and industry field trips.  Business and industries are selected through contacts with faculty, Advisory Committee members, and Career Fair participants.

§         Students attend a career conference focusing on specific vocational and technical education areas, such as Health, Administration of Justice, and Business.  At the March 18, 2004 Health Careers Conference, attended by over 200 students, speakers represented a wide variety of occupational fields including EMT, Gerontology, Acupuncture, Trauma Nursing, Physical Therapy, Pharmacy, and Volunteerism.

§         The Center has also developed an informational sheet that suggests specific career-related activities that faculty can incorporate into their curriculum.  Strategies for curriculum integration are also shared at Flex/Professional Development workshops and networking opportunities.
