Mt. SAC Tutor-Translator Program Created for Electronics Course

In 2003,  Mt. San Antonio College’s Electronics Program developed a new course in electric cabling and wiring, and target marketed a geographic region of its attendance area for student recruitment.

The College partnered with the Pomona Unified School District, setting up a classroom in an off-site retail location that had been converted to a magnet high school learning facility.

When instruction began, it was apparent that there were a high number of students for whom English was a second language.

To improve student success rates, the College recruited multi-lingual Electronics majors to serve as tutor-translators for students needing parallel instruction and translation services in the classroom.

LEP students have felt very positive about their learning experience and response for course enrollment has been high.

Recently, course offerings have been expanded to include afternoon sessions for local high school students.
