Electrical Technology – Variable Speed Drives @ LBCC

The Electrical Technology Department formerly had a separate electronics program. After several years with a declining enrollment and then consultation with the department advisory committee, it was determined that the traditional general electronics program was not meeting the needs of local industry.

The advisory committee recommended variable speed drive courses. The general electronics program was terminated and a new series of courses covering industrial electronics emphasizing variable speed drives was written as an elective option for advanced electrical students and working professionals. The courses cover material including electronic devices, test equipment, surface mount circuit board assembly, component level troubleshooting, microcontroller and commercial drive programming and system level troubleshooting. The result of creating the courses to meet the needs of local industry was a waiting list for the first class.
