You Can Keep Kids in School
They don’t have to go to university to succeed in life, but dropping out of
high school is a dead end. Luckily, kids have options today.
Holly Benn was fed up. The Grade 11
student at Millwood High School in Sackville, N.S., was failing her core
subjects and wanted to quit school. She knew that without a high-school
education she was unlikely to get a good job, but she wanted to go to work
anyway. “I couldn’t see myself doing anything big with my life,” she says.
Holly’s situation is not uncommon.
According to a Statistics Canada report, about 12 percent of 20-year-olds in
1999 did not have a high-school diploma and were not working towards one.
This means that over 48,000 young men and women had failed to get a basic
education.
Holly might have joined their ranks, but
she was lucky. In 1993 a “co-operative education” program was established at
Millwood High that allowed students to explore a career by completing 100
hours of work experience in a semester. 01/03
