Data Development
Partnerships in the San Diego Region
Many of the databases developed by the San
Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) were obtained through
cost-effective partnerships with state, federal, and local government
agencies; academic institutions; and the private sector, enabling costs to
be spread among the participating agencies...Without partnerships, most of
these databases may not have been developed. Probably an even greater
benefit from data development partnerships is that more people and agencies
use these data. While partnerships can increase project costs slightly, in
our experience these benefits far outweigh any increase in costs...While
partnerships are a valuable tool for database development, their success is
not guaranteed and requires a firm commitment and due diligence from all
participants. Below are 10 guidelines for creating successful partnerships
that have served us well over the years.
