The Central Region Consortium  May 12, 2005  Guest Speaker - Sue Nelle DeHart - Special Populations -

A Message to Educators of the California Joint Special Populations Advisory Committee List Service -  Sue Nelle DeHart will be in Merced, California on Thursday, May 12, 2005 to present A Framework for Understanding Poverty!

The Central Region Consortium invites you and your colleagues to participate in a full day of training on Thursday, May 12, 2005, at the Boys and Girls Club of Merced County / McComb Youth Center.  Nationally recognized expert, Sue Nelle DeHart, Ed.D., will present an in-depth study of issues related to economic disadvantage that affect recruitment, retention, placement, and training of vocational education students.  The session will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude by 4 p.m.  There is NO COST to attend!  Workshop materials and lunch will be provided by the Central Region Consortium!  This is a day you won't want to miss!

Based on the book by Ruby Payne, Ph.D., A Framework for Understanding Poverty, Dr. DeHart will cover such topics as:

  • how economic class affects behaviors and mindsets
  • why students from generational poverty often fear being educated
  • the "hidden rules" within economic classes
  • discipline interventions that improve behavior
  • the eight resources that make a difference in success

Related discussions also include case studies, support systems, the role of language registers, discourse patterns and story structure, and the relationship between eye movement and learning.

As you may have heard, Dr. DeHart captured the attention of over 200 participants at the 2004 California Joint Special Populations Advisory Committee (JSPAC) conference in February 2004 with many saying, "She was outstanding!"  and "Best day of training I have ever received."

ADVANCE REGISTRATION is REQUIRED, as space is limited.  To REGISTER, visit the Central Region Consortium Web site at www.crconsortium.com .  Select the Events/Registration link from the home page, then May 12, 2005.  Link to the full agenda, travel directions, and online registration from this page.  If overnight lodging is needed, we suggest the Holiday Inn Express, 730 Motel Drive in Merced.  Each participant is responsible for travel and lodging expenses.

Forward this invitation to your colleagues.  We hope you will be able to join us for this training!

FREE Special Populations workshops

The California Department of Education (CDE) and the California CommunityCollege Chancellor's Office (CCCCO) along with the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) and the Joint Special Populations Advisory Committee (JSPAC) have worked together to develop and bring you this workshop.

Carl D. Perkins legislation defines special population students as:

.. Individuals from economically disadvantaged families, including foster children

.. Individuals preparing for nontraditional training and employment

.. Single parents, including single pregnant women

.. Displaced homemakers, and

.. Individuals with other barriers to educational achievement, including individuals with limited English proficiency.
