Best Practices Initiative Institute for Information Literacy  09/05

"The Characteristics of Programs of Information Literacy that Illustrate Best Practices: A Guideline," attempts to articulate elements of exemplary information literacy programs for undergraduate students at four-year and two-year institutions.

The characteristics identify and describe features notable in information literacy programs of excellence. The characteristics are not, however, descriptive of any one program, but rather represent a meta-set of elements identified through examination of many programs and philosophies of undergraduate information literacy.

The following resource was recommended by Ken Meehan, Director of Research at Fullerton College.

http://www.workforceusa.net/home/index.cfm is a virtual library of resources for workforce development practitioners of all kinds, providing access to over 2200 of the best tools and materials available from hundreds of organizations. It is organized into 11 major workforce development functions and topics and subtopics within each function.  Each function area houses different kinds of resources for a broad spectrum of uses (data, analysis, examples, tools, websites, etc.) If you register on the site you can indicate your interests and receive updates based on those choices. Additionally, once registered the site allows you to create your own favorites section, storing resources for future reference. Registrants can rate the resources on the site and provide information critiquing the resource or describing its usefulness in their work. This site has been funded by the U.S. Department of Labor, the Ford Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation.

Teaching and Training Materials http://www.gse.harvard.edu/~ncsall/teach.html

Improving Practice

These materials are designed for teachers and professional development staff. Part of NCSALL’s effort to link research and practice, they have been developed using findings emerging from NCSALL research. All materials have been piloted with adult students or teachers and revised on the basis of their feedback.

Teaching materials are guides for classroom activities that teachers can use to develop adult students’ literacy skills and knowledge of particular content. Training materials are guides for professional development activities, such as study circles, that help teachers develop their own knowledge and skills in a specific area.  12/02
