for Information Literacy 09/05
"The Characteristics of Programs of Information Literacy
that Illustrate Best Practices: A Guideline," attempts to articulate
elements of exemplary information literacy programs for undergraduate
students at four-year and two-year institutions.
The characteristics identify and describe features notable
in information literacy programs of excellence.
The characteristics are not, however, descriptive of any one program, but
rather represent a meta-set of elements identified through examination of
many programs and philosophies of undergraduate information literacy.

Teaching and
Training Materials
http://www.gse.harvard.edu/~ncsall/teach.html
Improving Practice
These materials are designed for teachers
and professional development staff. Part of NCSALL’s effort to link
research and practice, they have been developed using findings emerging
from NCSALL research. All materials have been piloted with adult
students or teachers and revised on the basis of their feedback.
Teaching materials are guides for
classroom activities that teachers can use to develop adult students’
literacy skills and knowledge of particular content.
Training materials are guides for
professional development activities, such as study circles, that help
teachers develop their own knowledge and skills in a specific area.

Learning styles and stages of
development of the learners and instructional design theory
This paper outlines Gagné's instructional design
theory and provides information on
how it is applied to instructional technology. His theory has three major
components: conditions of learning, learning outcomes, and the nine events
of instructions.
http://www.gsu.edu/webfs01/mst/mstswh/public_html/courses/it7000/papers/newpage21.htm
The fundamental concern of instructional design is the
creation of more effective learning environments for learners. In order to
do this, instructional designers must consider the various learning styles
and stages of development of the learners as they interact with course
material and develop a mature understanding of a topic. 12/02

Using graphic illustrations increases
efficacy in the classroom training setting -
One of the more useful ways of approaching instructional illustrations is by
examining their functions. In this discussion, we will examine how
illustrations can attract attention, aid retention, enhance understanding,

information and a variety of examples that illustrate the benefits of
the use of illustrations within the instructional context.

In recent years there has been an increased focus on the role of education

instructional design strategies. Some of the most important breakthroughs in
this regard have come from the discipline of
Cognitive Science, which deals with the mental processes of
learning, memory and problem solving. Examples of the instructional
design strategies generated by cognitive load theory are also provided.

What is Dacum?
DACUM is an acronym for developing a curriculum.
It is a one or two day
storyboarding process that provides a picture of what the worker does in
terms of duties, tasks, knowledge, skills, traits and in some cases the
tools the worker uses. The information is presented in graphic chart form
and can include information on critical and frequently performed tasks and
the training needs of workers. For additional information on DACUM, contact
