At the Western States Communication Association’s annual

conference, De Anza’s Speech Communication Department

was presented with the highest possible acknowledgment of

excellence: the Model Teaching Program Award.

Sally Murphy, communication professor and director of

general education at Cal State Hayward, was one of several

colleagues who nominated the department for this award.

"De Anza’s Speech Communication Department is the finest

community college department I have known and rivals

university departments in the quality of the faculty as teachers,

scholars and community activists," she wrote in her nomination.
