Cosumnes Pre-Apprenticeship Aids Underrepresented |
|
Cosumnes River College organized coursework into a short-term construction pre-apprenticeship program, which was operated in partnership with the Construction Management program, VTEA, a JDIF economic development grant, and a grant from Sacramento Employment Training Agency. The curriculum was developed in conjunction with the Building Industry Association, Northern California Carpenter’s Regional Council, and a variety of other local partnerships. VTEA dollars paid for an instructional assistant for the program. Other partners paid remaining costs. Over 90 students successfully completed the coursework in the program; of these students, approximately one-fourth are female and over half are from underrepresented groups. In addition, the majority of the students speak English as a second language. Most of the completers are currently employed at an average wage of $14 per hour, and most of the students who participated in the program are from special populations, including approximately 25 percent who are women. As a result, we anticipate an improvement in all core indicators, with particular improvement in core indicator 4.
