Construction Program Targets Non-Traditional Populations |
|
Chaffey College has developed a pre-apprenticeship program in the occupational area of construction that combines life-skills training and workplace experience. Students get paid for completing a four-week classroom-training program, which includes topics of how to secure childcare and jobsite transportation as well as family budgeting. They then start in a four-week apprenticeship at $8 per hour. Students are provided with a hard hat, tool belt and steel-toed shoes. Students for the program are recruited by staff who visit Housing Authority residents on evenings and weekends. The majority of students have been older women with few job skills and little work experience. The program offers a career that is not only non-traditional, but has opportunities for future growth and advanced skill attainment.
