ERIC Digests are short reports on topics of prime current interest in education, covering a wide variety of topics targeted at teachers, administrators, policymakers, and other practitioners, but generally useful to the broad educational community. The former 16 subject ERIC Clearinghouse system was eliminated in 2003, and ERIC was massively reorganized, and most of the content at the former ERIC sites (including the ERIC Digests) found new homes on the internet. This site is striving to make it easy to find ERIC Digests that have been produced prior to the end of the former ERIC system. ERIC Digests are in the public domain and may be freely reproduced and disseminated in any format. Text from ERIC Digests on this site are in the public domain and may be used how ever you like. However, all other information on this site is copyrighted and may not be used without permission. Please note that this site is privately owned and is in no way related to any Federal Agency or ERIC unit. This site exists to provide the text of the public domain ERIC documents previously produced by ERIC. No new content will ever appear here that would in any way challenge the ERIC service mark of the US Government.

 Discover ERIC Digests at: www.ericdigests.org

An article found on ERIC Digests that may be of interest to 0900 educators is:

"Recent Strategies for Faculty Development. ERIC Digest", by Kathleen Alfano.

You can access this article online at: http://www.ericdigest.org/1995-1/faculty.htm.  The ERIC identifier is: ED371807

  • ERIC- The Educational Resources Information Center has been given new life, and is currently sponsored by the US Department of Education and the Institute of Education Sciences (IES). This website is currently expanding online access to nearly 340,000 documents indexed 1966-1992 now available only on microfiche. ERIC provides free access to more than 1.2 million bibliographic records of journal articles and other education-related materials, and, if available, includes links to full text. The user will find an alphabetical index covering 1966 to the present.

A 2007 ERIC search using the keywords vocational education found 60,627 results. A search using keywords industrial and technical education found 4,269 results. A search using keywords community college industrial and technical education found 404 results. A search using keywords community college career and technical education found 915 results. All searches included abstracts and most had access to the full text.

The National Association of Industrial Technology (NAIT) is recognized as the premier professional organization responsible for: 1.) the promotion of industrial technology in business, industry, education, and government, 2.0 the accreditation of industrial technology programs in colleges, universities, and technical institutes, and 3.) the certification of industrial technologists and the recognition of their continued professional development. The organization NAIT defines Industrial Technology as: a field of study designed to prepare technical and/or management oriented professionals for employment in business, industry, education, and government. Industrial Technology is primarily involved with the management, operation, and maintenance of complex technological systems while Engineering and Engineering Technology are primarily involved with the design and installation of these systems.

Discover more about NAIT at: http://www.nait.org.html

●The Journal of Industrial Technology is NAIT's peer-refereed scholarly publication. All articles posted in the JIT denoted as "peer-refereed" have been accepted after a double-blind peer referee process. The JIT offers a traditional hard-copy submission and review process and an electronic submission and review process (Note: The electronic review process has been temporarily suspended as of 12/9/05.) The JIT publishes both "peer-refereed" and "non-reviewed" scholarly and informational articles of interest to Industrial Technology students and professionals in industry and academia. Peer-refereed articles generally fit into two broad categories: 1) original research (basic, applied and pedagogical) and 2) meta-analysis / literature reviews of existing literature that provide a synthesis and suggest new implications or directions for further research. Non-reviewed articles are of general interest and are approved by one review board member based on topical interest and general quality of the article. As an online-only publication, the JIT continually posts new articles. New volumes of the JIT begin each January; new issues are posted beginning in January, April, July and October.

Discover The Journal of Industrial Technology online by going to the above NAIT website and clicking in the left margin over the Journal hot button, or you go directly with: www.nait.org/jit

An excellent starting point to discover what is available on the excellent website is to visit an index of current and past articles. To discover this index go to: www.nait.org/jit/current .

A sample of the more recent articles that could be of major interest to 0900 educators are:

"Improving the Knowledge Transfer Skills of Industrial Technology Students".

This article, written by Dr. Kevin W. Stier is found in Volume 22, Number 2 edition (April 2006 through June 2006). The author describes the underlying research project leading to this paper as containing two objectives: 1.) to identify and/or develop pedagogical strategies for teaching industrial automation that incorporate the cognitive science principles relating to knowledge transfer. 2.) develop and field test a specific unit of instruction for teaching the principles of the Cartesian Coordinate System as applied to Computer Numeric Control (CNC) machining center, industrial robots, and CMMs. The study revealed that three principles are at the heart of knowledge transfer: 1.) instruction should encourage students to learn conceptually, 2.) instruction should be contextualized, and 3.) instruction should help students understand the relationship between the relevant conceptual and procedural knowledge.

"Machinability: Employing a Drilling Experiment as a Teaching Tool".

This article is found in Volume 22, Number 1 (January 2006 through March 2006).

"Industrial Technology Program Enhancement: The Importance of Strategic Planning"

"Linking TQM Culture to Traditional Learning Theories".

These articles are both found in Volume 21, Number 4 (October 2005 through December 2005).

"A Case Study of How to Incorporate Cross-Functional Components in Industrial Technology Education: Safety Metrics in the Classroom".

"A Cross-Disciplinary Biotechnology Initiative: A New Frontier for Industrial Technology".

"A Short Preview of Free Statistical Software Packages for Teaching Statistics to Industrial Technology Majors".

The above three articles are found in Volume 21, Number 2 (April 2005 through June 2005).
