Palomar College’s Career Center received the “Education and Community Career Center Excellence” award by the California Career Development Association at the International Career Conference in Fall 2002. 

Palomar was the only college to receive this type of award by the CCDA.

Cerritos College has developed several Learning Communities – linked courses that can be co-taught, have integrated assignments, and be co-assessed – including a series that combines Career Planning, English, and Reading courses.  Learning Communities include “A Journey of Self Discovery,” “Fast Track to Success,” “Find Your Dream and the Path to Reach it,” and “From College to the Real World: Finding Yourself and a Career Through Writing.”  

The program also has an extensive Advisory Committee consisting of faculty and staff from Media, Business, Science/Math/Engineering, Liberal Arts, and Physical Education departments; Counseling; Faculty Senate; Library; and Adult Education.

“Modeling Physical Phenomena with Differential Equations” combines Math 275: Differential Equations and Engineering 260: Circuits and Devices through a lab that requires second order differential equations to describe and analyze physical phenomena.  Students participate through a group project and the lab.

 Students Supported in Development of Educational Plan for Training in Advanced Transportation Technology

      

The City College of San Francisco developed a recruitment plan and training program for students interested in the transportation field - specifically train conductor and railroad operations. 

Students were helped to develop an educational plan, received tutoring, and attended workshops on test taking, study skills and job interviewing. The college also developed a brochure in cooperation with the municipal transit unions that alerted transit employees to career advancement courses at the college.

Cosumnes River College’s Blackboard.com program was the recipient of a 2002 Student Success Award presented to eight California Community Colleges by the Board of Governors and the Chancellor’s Office. 

Blackboard.com provides a training resource for counseling via an instructional web site where counselors can access a common repository of information when they meet with students.  The award honors programs that demonstrate an ability to effectively respond to student needs in the areas of curricular and instructional services, economic development, vocational education, and student services.

Students and Technology Project Receives 2002 Student Success Award

   

Hartnell College’s Students and Technology Project was the recipient of a 2002 Student Success Award, presented to eight California Community Colleges by the Board of Governors and the Chancellor’s Office. 

The project is a collaboration between counseling, instruction and computer information staff to develop web-based technology that allows students to receive critical college advising, counseling, instruction and student services information.

One-Stop Center Participates in Career Day to Assist Low - Income Students

 

Los Angeles City College holds an annual Career Day for students each spring, involving regional employers looking to recruit qualified candidates.  The One Stop Satellite Workforce & Industry Network program also participates in the event, looking for students who are either low-income or on welfare.

 

The One Stop assists with job searches, interview techniques, transportation assistance, childcare referrals, and job training.  Some of these students are already employed, but the One Stop helps them obtain higher skill-higher wage jobs while they are attending college.

Pathways to Success Workshop Assists Re-entry Students

 

Grossmont College held a free “Pathways to Success” workshop in August 2002 for adult re-entry students interested in enrolling in postsecondary education. 

 

The workshop provided information on admission procedures, counseling, registration, financial aid and other services, and featured a panel of peer speakers whose message was “We did it, so can you.”

 

Peer speakers featured successful re-entry students who were economically disadvantaged, physically disabled, and non-traditional program completers.

Counseling Program Increases Number of Completers

   

As the VTEA Plan was developed for the Industrial and Technical Education programs at Rio Hondo College, an hourly counselor was employed and housed in the Technology Office area.  A schedule was developed whereby every student – day, evening, and Saturday – would meet with the counselor during an open lab time.

 

Preliminary results indicate that the number of completers has increased as well as course retention.

Guide to Employers Enhances Student Participation at Career Fair

  

Cuyamaca College holds an annual Career Fair each spring, open to community members and students at no cost.  The college invites approximately 50 employers to attend and prepares a guide to help participants prepare for the interview process, including how to dress, what questions to ask, and how to follow up with an employer at a later time.

 

Each employer is listed alphabetically along with a short description of what they do and the skill sets that they are seeking from applicants.  Prior to the Career Fair, workshops are held in the fall to prepare students for the interview process and selection of a career path.

 

Workshops include Interview Skills, Resume Writing, Job Search on the Internet, Job Search Strategies, How to Ace the Job Interview, and How to Choose a Career and Complete Your Degree.

 

The Career Center also offers free assessment services including CHOICES and SIGI computer-based career planning tools, the Keirsey Temperament Sorter, and a Self-Directed Search that can be self-scored.
