Regional Fire Academy Prepares Future Firefighters |
|
Oxnard College’s Regional Fire Academy is a cooperative program of the college and the California State Fire Marshall, providing certificates from the California Specialized Training Institute, National Wildfire Coordinating Group, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection as well as the California State Fire Marshal. Instructors are current duty, seasonal or retired Firefighters that have completed Fire Instructor IA and IB State Fire Marshal courses. Certificates offered include Firefighter I, Rescue Systems I, Vehicle Extrication, Confined Space Awareness, Hazardous Materials First Responder Operational, Hazardous Materials First Responder Operational Decontamination, ICS 200, Introduction to Fire Behavior, Basic Firefighter, Firefighter Survival, Firefighter Orientation, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, and 80-Hour Basic Firefighter.

Technology Division Offers Industrial Problem Solving Courses |
|
Orange Coast College’s Technology Division has developed two Problem Solving Technology courses for technicians and others who need to develop math, physics, technical and common sense skills and critical thinking. The first course focuses on taking measurements, computing with measured values, and solving problems related to technical and vocational fields. The advanced course focuses on industrial problem solving, including difficult technical problems, and the use of the hand-held scientific calculator.

Machine Technology Program Offers NIMS Credentialing |
|
Orange Coast College’s Machine Technology program includes a comprehensive and unified curriculum with 350 page syllabi for Machinist, Tooling, CNC Operator, CNC Programmer, and Programmer Upgrade certificates. The program is the first college in the state to offer NIMS credentialing, meeting national-level skills standards. Five different extracurricular clubs and associations are supported by the program and the college is a regular VICA competitor, winning 47 out of 53 possible state medals in machine technology since 1993.

Residential Construction Technology Program Largest in State |

Orange Coast College’s Construction Technology Department has developed the largest and most comprehensive residential construction and management program in California, staffed by faculty who are all licensed general contractors. Programs include certificates in basic construction practices, residential construction development, and master construction specialist; and certificates of achievement in residential light gauge steel frame construction and residential construction professional upgrades.

Electronics Technology Program Offers Professional Upgrades |

Orange Coast College’s Electronics Technology program offers professional upgrades in Microcomputers and Test and Troubleshooting. Courses are intended for advanced electronics students or employed technicians who want training in these specific areas. Courses that must be completed for the Microcomputers Certificate include Digital Computers/Microprocessors, Applied Digital Circuits, and Computer Installation and Repair. Courses that must be completed for the Test and Troubleshooting Certificate include Electronic Measurements, Electronic Troubleshooting, and Computer Use in Technology.

Aviation Technology Program Prepares Students for FAA Exams |
|
Orange Coast College’s Aviation Technology program provides hands-on training in five distinct technical areas: Airframe, Powerplant, Airframe and Powerplant, Avionics, and Helicopter. The training facility is a certified FAA approved program, has 17 aircraft and helicopters that are used for maintenance training, an enclosed Engine Test Cell for reciprocating and turbine engines, a 26-station computer lab with over 19 aircraft and avionics training programs, and an on-site FAA computer testing station. Upon completion of FAA approved programs, students are eligible to take FAA exams and receive an Airframe and Powerplant license.

Electronics Curriculum Expands to Meet Biomedical and Communications Employer Needs |

Napa Valley College has developed two specialized programs in the occupational area of Electronics Technology – Biomedical Electronics Technology and Communications/CATV Technology. The Biomedical Electronics Technology program focuses on training for the service and repair of medical instrumentation used in the health care industry. The Communications/CATV Technology program trains students to work in a broad range of fields including telephone, satellite television relay, and voice and data transmission.

Pierce College’s Academic Outreach program, targeted towards high school students and other community members, has developed two courses in automotive services. The courses allow students to enroll in a college program while still in high school, learn about automobile technology, and explore career opportunities in automotive service. Fire Academy Offers Extended Weekend Program |

Glendale College’s Arroyo Seco Regional Fire Academy is an accredited program offering an Associate Degree or Certificate in Fire Technology, and Basic Firefighter Academy and California State Fire Training and Education System (CFSTES) training courses. The Basic Firefighter Academy offers an extended program on weekends, allowing working students to attend. WomenTech Increases Women Enrolled and Retained in Technology Education |
|
College of Alameda is a national demonstration site under the WomenTech Project, administered by the Institute for Women in Trades, Technology & Science. The purpose of WomenTech is to recruit women to technology programs at the college and retain them in programs such as Automotive, Cisco Networking, Aviation, Diesel Technology, and Microsoft Networking. The college hosts a career expo and multi-cultural fair where participants hear from female role models on how they made it, participate in hands-on demonstrations in labs, talk with instructors in targeted programs, and meet with industry representatives. A.S. Degree Program has On-site Connection to B.S. Degree offered by Southern Illinois University |

Mt. San Antonio College offers A.S. degrees in Aeronautics, Aircraft Maintenance, and Air Traffic Control. Graduates are eligible for advanced placement in the B.S. degree program in Aviation Management, offered by Southern Illinois University and conducted on the Mt. SAC campus. With this linkage of degree programs, students can earn their A.S. and B.S. in less than four years.

The Diesel Technology program at Shasta College has direct support for a career ladder. The program had strong support from Caterpillar, with four $50,000 and three $20,000 grants given over the last 10 years. Grants are used to purchase current, up to date equipment for the program as well as provide scholarships for four students each year. Students completing the program with an AS degree and a GPA of 3.0 or higher are prime recruits for employment by Caterpillar, which offers positions starting at $14 per hour.

| West Los Angeles College offers a Fire Instruction, Recruitment and Education, (F.I.R.E.), vocational and technical education Academy that serves high school students wanting to transition to the world of work. This “School-to-Career” Academy, (where potential employers are brought in to provide "hands-on" instruction to students), seeks to motivate high school students to increase their achievement in academic classes for future careers. College Promotes Vocational Programs to Undeclared Majors |
Mt. San Antonio College targeted 12,000 undeclared students, ESL and other special populations for increased awareness of vocational programs and workforce opportunities. Vocational programs marketed focused on five TOPs Code areas including Electronics, Environmental Control, Aeronautics, World Travel and Aircraft Maintenance. Targeted students were identified by administering a survey devised by key vocational faculty and industry experts. Marketing and promotional materials were sent to the target group, along with an invitation to attend a 6-hour "Career Exploration" event hosted by the college. The "Career Exploration" event was held in the labs of featured programs/departments and received the most contact from students “walking by” on campus. Future career awareness events were designed to be held during registration, facilitated by counseling staff.
