Letter from the President: Those of us at Butte College...
are committed to maintaining our national leadership in sustainability. As part of this effort we've made "Modeling Sustainability" one of the five initiatives in our Strategic Plan, signed the Talloires Declaration and the President's Climate Commitment, established a Board Policy on sustainability, and become active members in a variety of sustainability-oriented organizations to include the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) and the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE). Our focus on sustainability is reflected in our curriculum, in our facilities and operations, and in our student activities. We've established a broad-based sustainability steering committee to oversee the program and to ensure that our efforts are coordinated. Colleges Partner with two Foundations for Manufacturing Summer Camps in 2009
The Foundation for Community Colleges received funding through the Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs program of the Foundation of the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association Inc. (www.nutsandboltsfoundation.org) to hold several 2009 summer manufacturing camps:
· College of the Sequoias – Welding So Hot Camp and Camp Robotico
· Fresno City College – Camp CADD
· Cuesta College – Welding Camp for ILP Youth
· Los Angeles Valley College – Advanced Manufacturing Training Institute
· Yuba Community College – Welding So Hot Camp
The camps served youth age 14-18 and targeted foster children. The goal was to provide positive, hands-on experiences and attract students to career pathways in manufacturing, design and fabrication.

Logistics Management Program at Riverside Community College
RCC offers an online degree and certificate program in Business Management with a Logistics Management Concentration. The program is supported by the Distribution Management Association of Southern California (DMA) and students can articulate up to 75 percent of their units to the American Military University and American Public University towards a Bachelor's Degree in Logistics and Transportation or Business Administration.
The program website features information on careers and salaries, includes a logistics glossary and logistics videos (http://academic.rcc.edu/logisticsmanagement/). For more information, contact Professor Rex Beck at Rex.Beck@rcc.edu.
On September 1, 2009, the Norco Campus opened a new $30 million Industrial Technology Building that includes classrooms for logistics courses. The logistics lab includes computers with the same software used by logistics companies dotting Interstate 15 that are tied to the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, rail lines and LA and Ontario international airports.
The TRUCCS:
Transfer and Retention of Community College Students project is a longitudinal study of the goals, success and academic patterns of 5,000 community college students in Los Angeles, seeking to identify student goals, activities and actions that promote success.

'Organic Women' Seek to Break Science Mold
Programs focus women on nontraditional jobs BY JEFFREY PHILLIPS, Published July 5, 2007 A national organization that focuses on placing women in nontraditional jobs is working to help California community colleges attract more females into emerg ing technology fields. The Institute for Women in Trades, Technology & Sciences (IWITTS), a 12-year-old national nonprofit orga nization, has selected four California community colleges for the Cal Women Tech Project (CWTP), which aims to help train colleges in attracting women into game development, geographic information systems and digital home integration technology. “We chose to focus on emerging tech nologies because we wanted to position women on the cutting edge. Trained technicians are in high demand, and these are exciting careers,” said Donna Milgram, executive director and founder of IWITTS. Females enrolled in male-dominated programs often find it difficult not only to “fit in” into male-dominated professions, but they also have difficulty in classrooms where the teaching is geared toward male students, Milgram said. “This program provides concrete skills on how to recruit and retain women in the technology field,” she said. CWTP aims to increase recruitment of women at the community colleges participating in CWTP by 10 percent to 15 percent, as well as increase retention by providing free training to the college on how to better accommodate women. For example, the program will focus on teaching spatial reasoning and modify ing curriculums so that they appeal to female interests and learning styles.

Merced College
The Mechanized Ag./ Diesel Equipment Technology Program had the opportunity to update its instructional equipment by adding three late model, over the road trucks, to the their inventory. These newer units provided the opportunity to more effectively train student on electronically controlled systems currently in use on today’s big rigs. These systems include computer controlled engines, power trains, ABS braking and onboard diagnostics. Once the semi trucks were delivered, it was decided, that in addition to using the trucks as instructional tools, the Merced College Agriculture and Industrial Technology Programs could use them as a marketing tool during student recruitment activities and career fairs. Merced College adjunct instructor Bob Hiser and his Auto Body & Collision Repair students took on the challenge of developing a graphic design for the truck that would display the quality of workmanship and talent that Merced College Students possess.
